Located in the heart of Staten Island, Cantina Mexicana offers an authentic taste of Mexico infused with vibrant energy and a welcoming, diner-like atmosphere. This Mexican restaurant perfectly balances bold, traditional flavors with a casual and colorful dining space that feels both inviting and lively. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by the warm glow of southwestern decor and a charming enclosed outdoor area that’s perfect for enjoying a relaxed meal with family or friends.
Cantina Mexicana’s menu is a treasure trove of Mexican culinary delights, featuring expertly crafted dishes that satisfy both the adventurous and the comfort-food lovers. Signature items like the sizzling grilled chicken fajitas burst with tender, smoky goodness, while the Steak Jalapeño offers a spicy kick that perfectly complements the fresh, crisp sides. The street tacos—ranging from lobster to braised beef to shrimp—are standouts, boasting bold, layered flavors and tortillas that hold together beautifully, avoiding the common pitfall of falling apart mid-bite.
One can’t visit without trying their guacamole dip, which diners rave about for its fresh, creamy texture and vibrant flavor, perfectly paired with hearty fried corn tortilla chips that are refilled generously without charge. To accompany your meal, Cantina Mexicana offers a variety of handcrafted beverages including classic margaritas, tropical pineapple margaritas, and the unique tamarind margarita – each meticulously mixed to balance sweetness and tang, elevating the overall dining experience.
For those craving rich, complex tastes, the Mole Poblano adds a deep, velvety layer of flavor that lingers satisfyingly on the palate. The burritos and chimichangas present a hearty option, packed with well-seasoned carnitas, pulled beef, or vegetables, all wrapped in soft flour tortillas and complemented by sour cream and cheeses. The Birria quesadillas are a true indulgence, filled with pulled beef and Oaxaca cheese, served with a flavorful birria dipping sauce that invites dipping and savoring every bite.
Cantina Mexicana doesn’t just stop at dinner; their breakfast burrito is a flavorful start to your day, while sweet plantains and Mexican coffee cake offer a delightful finale for those with a sweet tooth. Side dishes such as Pico De Gallo, black beans, and the ever-popular side of guacamole round out the meal with complementary textures and tastes that enhance rather than overshadow the star dishes.
Customers consistently praise the attentive and friendly service, noting how the staff and owners go above and beyond to make each visit comfortable and memorable. The atmosphere encourages lingering, conversation, and repeat visits, with many patrons naming Cantina Mexicana their new go-to spot on Staten Island for genuine Mexican fare done right.
Whether you're craving the smoky, garlicky notes of grilled shrimp marinated in their secret Spanish sauce or the spice-laden pleasures of a perfectly cooked rib eye taco with rich mushroom sauce, Cantina Mexicana delivers a dining experience that engages all the senses. It’s a place where every bite tells a story, and every visit feels like a celebration of Mexican flavors and hospitality.
Service and food here were excellent. The guacamole was fantastic and tasted fresh. The tacos didn't fall apart and they had wonderful combinations of flavors for each taco option. This is definitely my new go-to spot on Staten Island.
We ordered the steak and blackened chicken fajitas. The sangria was well made. The staff, owners were very accommodating, gracious and friendly. This was our 1st visit and it won't be our last. We can't wait to dine there again!
Super chill atmosphere! We ordered the shrimp cocktail & buffalo wings. My husband did not like the shrimp cocktail it was in a sauce heavy on cumino or curry or tumeric. Wings were average. Main entree was the rib eye tacos!! On point! They were delicious, perfectly cooked DO NOT skip on the sauce, the mushroom sauce made the meal!! The tres leche was not entirely soaked in milk. I was disappointed for I know 3/leche is suppose to be soaked in 3 diff kinds of milk. The sangria was average. I will come again, but it is not my first choice. Very Mediocre
With a diner-like appearance and colorful plates to add a southwestern palette, this place is like a Mexican / Diner hybrid. Upon entry, I noticed a cozy enclosed outdoor seating area, followed by a few steps up to the main entrance. Evening street parking was a breeze. Famished, we sat toward the back and commenced with two appetizers: guacamole with hearty tortillas chips (they don’t break when you scoop up the guacamole), and Choriqueso (melted cheese, chorizo, Picolo de gallo, guacamole, flour tortillas), I wasn’t crazy about the salsa, however, the guacamole was very good. I decided to try the Toro Narteño (grilled steak, jalapeño, pico de Galli, Monterey cheddar cheese). Which was very tasty, I found the jalapeño to be very fresh and crunchy, and My husband ordered the Enchiladas Suizas (pulled chicken, green salsa, corn tortillas, cheddar cheese, Monterey, Avocado, pickled red onions, rice & black beans). I didn’t like it at all, the tortilla tasted like it was made with all-purpose flour and the chicken was soggy. Rice and beans were ok. Our friend ordered the Burrito Classico (ground beef, shrimp, steak), he liked it. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. His recommendations for desserts that were made on premises were everything on the menu except the ice cream and mexican coffee cake. So we ordered the tres leches and the Mexican coffee cake (because I heard it’s made with mascarpone cheese! So it’s like tiramisù without the coffee). They really aced the Tres Leches. As a side note, if you have a sensitivity to msg, you should let them know because they do use adobo in their cooking. 4 stars are for cleanliness, wait staff, appetizers and dessert.
Delicious local Mexican food! Sometimes when I visit my fiancé’s family in SI we will come here for lunch and it never disappoints! Today we went with guac to start and then tacos. They refilled our chips multiple times for no charge! The Pina el pastor and el ranchero tacos were delicious and we’d definitely get them again!
